Searching from the homepage
With the main search form on the homepage you can select a job role, a location, and specify your salary or rate. You can also include keywords that you want to appear in the job description of the job you are looking for e.g. Civil Engineer" or 'Graduates (See below for details).
When you're satisfied with your selection you simply click on the 'Search' button and let CareerStructure.com generate a list of every matching vacancy.
Searching by keyword
Keyword searching means you can search for a specific word or string of words among the jobs we have.
The best words to use as search terms are those that usually only appear in the title or description of the jobs you are looking for. If your line of work requires a particular qualification or skill, using terms like surveyor or CAD can quickly find relevant jobs. Please note that common words such as 'it', 'the', and 'of' cannot be used for searching.
You can further refine your search by looking for particular phrases or combining words using AND, OR, AND NOT, " " or *.
Here are a few examples:
Site AND Manager
This combination will find advertised vacancies that contain both the words 'Site' and 'manager', but not necessarily together.
Site OR Manager
This combination will find advertised vacancies that contain either the word 'Site' or 'manager'. This is a broad search, and will return many results.
Surveyor AND NOT Quantity
This combination will find advertised vacancies that contain the word 'Surveyor' but NOT the word 'quantity'. This is useful if there are job that you do not wish to see in your results.
"Site manager"
If you want to look for a phrase, put around the phrase, Only vacancies containing this phrase will be included in the results.
If you want open your search to include all the variations of a word, just add an asterisk after the 'stem'. For example if you type archi* the results would include 'architect' and 'architectural'.
Browsing by job role
To help you find the right position, you can search by common job roles. First click on the "Browse by job role" link at the bottom of the home page, and then click on the role you are interested in. You will then see results specifically for that job role.
If the browse by job role page doesn't include the one you are looking for, try using our keyword search on the homepage, or browse by sector or location.
Browsing by sector
To help you search according to industry sector, CareerStructure.com has divided its jobs into common sectors. First click on the "Browse by sector" link at the bottom of the home page, and then click on the sector you are interested in. You will then see results specifically for that sector.
If the browse by sector page doesn't include the one you are looking for, try using our keyword search on the homepage, or browse by sector or location.
Browsing by location
If you are motivated by where a job is rather than what industry it is in, you can use our location search. You can enter a location either by postcode or by name (town, county or district). We have made this easier by including a suggestions list, when you begin typing. These suggestions are from the location list in our database, and do not indicate that there are jobs in that location currently on the site. If you type in a location we do not recognise, or you misspell it, we will try to match it as closely as possible.
Once you have selected your location, you can specify a distance around that location depending on how far you would be prepared to commute.
Searching the company index
Here you'll find companies who advertise directly with CareerStructure.com as well as agencies who use CareerStructure.com when recruiting on behalf of companies. Click on the relevant link and then click on the logo to view latest vacancies and information about the company.
You can also search alphabetically using the letters on the Companies Index page. Click on a letter, and all the companies whose names begin with that letter will be displayed. Click on the company name to view their jobs and information.
Using the Job Basket
Job Basket is a feature that allows you to store the jobs you are interested in, while you are viewing job results or job details pages. You can then go back and apply for all these jobs in one go.
To save a job to your basket, click on the 'add' link next to the basket icon, on the results or job details page. If you change your mind, just click on the ticked basket icon to remove it from your basket, or go to the job basket page.
Once you have finished viewing your results, click on the job basket link near the top of the page you are on, and you will see the job basket page. This page is divided into two sections. In the first section are all the jobs that you can apply for in one go. In the second section are jobs that must be applied for individually because the recruiter has specified a different apply process.
To apply for multiple jobs, tick the square check box next to each job you want to apply for (to help you, they are all pre-ticked), then click on the 'Apply for selected jobs' button.
Your job basket only remains for the time you are on the site and will empty as soon as you move off the site or close your browser. You can only store up to 20 jobs at any one time.
Using Saved Searches
To help save you time, CareerStructure.com has the 'Save this search' option on the results page. If you have carried out a search you are happy with, and want to use again, click on the 'save this search' link on the results page. A window will appear, where you will be asked to name your search. When you click on 'save settings', you search will be saved, and you can access it from the 'Saved Searches' button on the left hand menu.
Your search is saved to the PC you are currently using.
To manage your searches, hover over the 'Saved Searches' button, and click on 'manage my searches'. Another window will appear, where you can delete a search you have saved. If you want to edit a saved search, just carry out a new search, and click on 'Save this search', then delete the old one.
