Galliford Try's house building business is switching to a four day week. Is that how a lot of firms are going to solve the downturn?
JCB has also gone down that route.
It feels more like the 1970s every day.
As someone who can (just about!) remember the 70s, I hope you're not right, though I know where you're coming from
One difference is that there isn't the huge oil hikes and energy shortages, which is chiefly why we had the three-day week back then.
This time round it's due to lack of work, which is in some ways more worrying.
Unfortunately, the reduction in hours hasn't helped JCB much - they've just announced another 684 job losses.
The recession is partly down to lack of work - in sectors like housebuilding - but another big reason at the moment is the banks.
As the JCB chief exec says - he's having to lay people off because the banks won't give credit to his clients - ie. the construction industry.
And this after billions of our taxes were given to the banks to prop them up.
Dr Dave:...............and now there is going to be another bail-out of the banks by our inept "Government"!
Good money after bad, if you ask me.
I wonder at what point they say 'no' to the banks?
